An Atheria Novel
A Horror Novel by Devin Castle
Synopsis
The Aperture is a novel set ten years before the events of Atheria.
The story follows Marcus Reyes — a forty-eight-year-old engineer for the Verdigris Water Authority — who, in the autumn of 2031, three years before the global collapse, accepts a federal contract he is not allowed to discuss. He is taken to a small facility outside of a town called Halden, in central Pennsylvania. He meets five other people who have signed similar contracts. He is told, in clinical language, what they are about to do. And then he and the other five descend into a chamber eighteen meters underground, where there is a hole in the air.
The previous people they sent through have not come back.
Marcus, knowing this, decides to go anyway.
The Aperture is a horror novel. It's also a novel about grief. Marcus has lost almost everything a man can lose without dying himself. The program that contacts him understands this, and gives him a chance to be something. The book is about what a program like that does with a man like that.
If you have ever stood at a window after something happened, and looked at a place where something used to be, and tried to make it be there again — The Aperture is for you.
From the Book
"Personal arrangements was not a phrase a man used about a job."
"The previous people they sent through have not come back."
"I am the kind of man who walks toward an open door even when he has been told the room is on fire."
"It is the way a sexton speaks of a graveyard."
About the Universe
The Aperture is set in the same universe as Atheria, Void Cypher Studios' forthcoming psychological horror video game. The novel takes place during what's known in the Atheria universe as the First Wave — a precursor research program that operated in the years before the global collapse, and whose existence is gradually uncovered by the player during the events of the game.
Both stories can stand on their own. The Aperture doesn't require the game to make sense, and Atheria doesn't require the book. But they share a world, and a question. If you read both, the connections will find you.

The Author
Devin Castle founded Void Cypher Studios to build the kind of horror experiences he most wanted to play and read. The Aperture is his first novel. It exists because the world of Atheria, the studio's forthcoming psychological horror video game, kept opening up the deeper he went into it. Every time he sat down to answer one question about Halden, three more would surface. The novel is the first place those questions go.
Neither the book nor the game has a release date yet. They'll be announced when ready. The best ways to follow along:
